Watford’s first success came in the year 1915 as they won the southern league and then became founder members of the third division in 1920. After suffering relegation they became founder members of the fourth division in 1959 and began to climb the table after that and in the year 1969 they won promotion in to the second division. The arrival of new manager, graham Taylor in 1977 transformed the club’s fortunes and between 1978 and 1982, he led the club from the fourth division in to the top flight. He took them to second place in the first tier of English football at the end of the 1982 – 1983 seasons and to the final of the 1984 FA cup the following year. After the departure of Taylor in 1987. Their fortunes changed and they slid down the divisions. They gained promotion back in to the top flight in 1999, however survived only one season in the premiership. After a tremendous run in the 2005 – 2006 season they gained promotion via the play offs, defeating Leeds United in the play off final.

Great Players

Luther Blissett – Blissett is without doubt one of the greatest ever player to star for Watford FC and his brilliance at the club helped the Hornets gain promotion from the fourth division in to the top flight. He was part of the Watford side that nearly won the league title in 1983. He scored a hat trick for England at Wembley in an incredible 9-0 win over Luxembourg. He signed for AC Milan in the summer of 1983 for £1,000,000 before coming back to the club for a second spell.
