In the year 1900, the Saints reached FA Cup final, however they suffered a 4-0 thrashing against Bury. Two years later they reached the final for a second occasion, suffering a 2-1 defeat against Sheffield United. After the Second World War, a succession of managers took charge at the Dell, but the Saints were relegated in 1953. Ted Bates led Southampton to promotion four years later. In the year 1966, the Saints went up to the first division for the first time. Lawrie McMenemy succeeded bates in 1973, however soon suffered relegation in 1976 however the saints won the 1976 FA Cup, defeating Man united 1-0 with a goal coming by Bobby Stokes.
Promoted again in 1978, McMenemy took Southampton to second place in the first division in 1984. The Saints stayed in the top flight between 1979 and 2005, a staggering 36 years. Matt Le Tissier was the bright spark of the Southampton team during the 1990’s. The Saints reached the FA Cup final in the year 2003, suffering a narrow 1-0 defeat against Arsenal.

Great Players

Terry Paine`- Paine was capped 19 times for England during his career and was also Southampton’s longest serving football player. He holds the record for most league appearances with the Saints, 713 matches. He was a dominant force in the side during the 1960’s and 1970’s and he was a major factor in Southampton’s 1966 promotion winning campaign.
