Reading FC were the founder members of the southern league division three in 1920 and gained promotion in to the second division in 1926. Reading boasted two of the finest defenders in Britain during the 1920’s, Alf Messer and Billy McConnell. In the year 1932, Reading was relegated out of the second division, a place they did not return for 55 years. They reached rock bottom during the 1970 – 1971 season as they fell in to the fourth division for the first time. They gained promotion back to the second division in the 1985 – 1986 season and they won the Simod cup in 1988, they hovered over the second and third division during the late 80’s and early 90’s and nearly gained promotion in to the premiership in 1995, suffering defeat against Bolton in the 1995 play off final, it was a season that Jimmy Quinn was in prolific form for the Royals. Reading finally gained promotion into the premiership at the end of the 2005 – 2006 campaign as they finished the season in top position in the championship under the guidance of Steve Coppell.

Great Players

Jimmy Quinn - Quinn began his football career playing for Swindon Town in 1981, before moving to Blackburn. He spent one year playing for Leicester City during the 1988- 1989 campaign. It was during his two years at West Ham when Quinn was really noticed in English football, his 47 appearances at the club, resulted in a reasonable eighteen goals and soon earned him a transfer to Bournemouth in 1991, a club he spent one year with. In the summer of 1992, Quinn moved to Reading FC and he endured his finest spell of his playing career at the club. The 1993-94 campaign was a fantastic one for Quinn. He won the second division ‘golden boot’ award,’ netting in an astonishing 40 goals, in turn promoting the club to the first division. Quinn spent five years at the club, scoring 71 goals in 182 appearances.
