Portsmouth were admitted in to the third division in the year 1920 and quickly gained promotion in to the first division at the end of the 1926 – 1927 campaign. Portsmouth reached three FA Cup finals all between 1929 and 1939, winning the 1939 final by defeating Wolves. Bob Jackson led Portsmouth during their glorious era of the later 1940’s as they won the league title in 1949 and 1950, Jackson’s team included Jimmy Dickinson, Jimmy Scoular and Reg Flewin. Portsmouth dropped in to the second division in 1959 and spent most of the 1960’s and 1970’s in the second division, by the year 1978; they dropped in to the fourth division. When Alan Ball took charge at the club in 1984, he took them back to the top flight for a single season in 1988. After suffering relegation they spent years in the second tier of English football and came close to promotion in 1993 as their prolific goal scorer, Guy Whittingham, scored a staggering 42 goals in 46 matches. Portsmouth finally gained promotion under the guidance of Harry Redknapp at the end of the 2002 – 2003 campaign and are now a well established premiership club.

Great Players:
Guy Whittingham –
Whittingham commenced his career playing for Portsmouth in 1986 and soon became an immediate success at the club. He started off playing behind the main forward player and soon later on established himself as an all out striker. He made a name for himself in the English football league during the 1992-93 campaign, he was a phenomenon in front of the net, despite playing in every match for Pompey that season, he scored an incredible 42 league goals during the 92-93 season and registered another six goals in cup competitions. In total, scoring 48 goals during the season. The 48 goals he scored, was the most any player scored in the football league during one single season over the decade, a proud record for any forward player to have.
