Middlesbrough hit the big time in the year 1905 as they reached the top flight and set a record fee of signing Alf Common for £1,000. Apart from a spell during the 1920’s, Boro were a first division side until the year 1954. Boro had a reputation of fielding great forwards, such as Steve Bloomer and George Camsell. Camsell was an incredible goal scorer, notching up 326 league goals in 14 years at Boro. Another famous name associated with the club was Brian Clough, scoring an astonishing 197 goals in only 213 league games at Boro. Despite having a top reputation, the highest they have ever reached in the league is third place in the 1913 – 1914 season. Boro returned to the top flight in 1974 under Jack Charlton; however they dropped back in the third division in the 1980’s. They came back into the top flight during the mid 90’s and boasted a strong team during the 1996 – 1997 season, including Fabrizio Ravanelli, Paul Merson, Paul Gascoigne and Juninho. They reached the FA Cup and league cup final in 1997 and finally won the league cup in 2004 under the guidance of Steve McClaren.

Gary Pallister
Pallister commenced his career playing at the heart of the Boro defence at the young age of 19 years during the 1984-85 league season. He spent 4 years playing in the heart of the Boro back line, making 156 league appearances for Middlesbrough. He moved to Manchester United in the summer of 1989, his £2,400,000 million move made him the clubs most expensive ever purchase at the period. During his fine first spell at Boro he made his first England appearance in April 1988. He went on to spend 9 years with United prior moving back to Middlesbrough in time for the 1998-99 season. During his second spell at Middlesbrough he made over sixty appearances in a 3 year period.
