Manchester United’s first major success came in the year 1908, winning the league title and they followed that up the following year by winning the FA Cup.
The arrival of Matt Busby as manager after the Second World War heralded a great period for Manchester United. They finished runners up in four of five post war league championships. They won the league title in 1952 and again in 1956 and 1957 with a fantastic young side – the ‘Busby babes.’ Hopes of winning a third successive league title was perished at Munich airport on the afternoon of 6th February 1958. The 1960’s saw a new re built Manchester united side win the league title in 1965 and 1967. The European Cup final win in 1968 was the finest hour in matt Busby’s career. United won the FA Cup in 1977 and again in 1983 and 1985. The arrival of Alex Ferguson in 1986 promised much and they won their first silverware at the end of the 1989 -1990 season, the FA cup. They went on to win the European cup winners cup and then the league cup. They won the first ever premiership title at the end of the 1992 – 1993 season and the ‘double’ the next season. They achieved the ‘double’ once again at the end of the 1995 – 1996 season and Eric Cantona was in fine form for the club. Their finest ever achievement came during the 1998 – 1999 season as they won the ‘treble,’ the League title, FA Cup and the champions league, the latter was won late on with a goal coming by Ole Gunner Solskjaer. The early 21st century saw them win the title in the year 2000, 2001 and 2003.
