Lincoln started off their football career as a strong side, finishing the 1901 – 1902 season off in fifth place; their finest ever finish in the football league. Lincoln enjoyed a fine run during the 1950’s as they played frequent football in the second division. They fell back in the third division in 1961 and later on were relegated to the fourth division in 1963, a place they remained for 13 years, until gaining promotion back to the third division in 1976 as they finished off at the top of the table. In 1982 and 1983, Lincoln City narrowly missed out on promotion to the second division and they suffered relegation in to the GM Vauxhall conference at the end of the 1987 – 1988 campaign. They gained promotion back in to the football league instantly and have now been lying in the third and fourth tier of English football for many consecutive years.
