Hereford United spent many years as a non league football club and just before they gained promotion in to the football league, they met Newcastle United in the third round of the FA Cup and shocked the entire Britain by defeating the top flight club 2-1. The ultimate success came in 1976 as they earned promotion to the second division and only remained in the tier for one season.
