Hartlepool played in the north Eastern League until the year 1921, the year that they joined the football league. The Pool finished in fourth place in their debut season in the third division North in 1922. Despite the fine start, they did not enjoy any success for the next 25 years. In the year 1965, Brain Clough arrived at the club as their new manager and started to assemble the squad that won an honour. Hartlepool gained promotion in to the third division in 1968, however their stay only lasted a single season. Since then Hartlepool have been a fourth tier football club, however they did recently enjoy a string of years playing in the third tier of English football. They are currently playing their football in the ‘league two.’

Wattie Moore – Moore was a key member of the Hartlepool side while they played thier football in the third division north and the fourth division. His career at Hartlepool spanned sixteen years between 1948 and 1964 and he hold the record of most league appearances made for the club, having played 448 times for Hartlepool FC.
