Doncaster Rovers were elected into the second division in 1901 however they spent many years later playing in the North division three. From 1951, Rovers enjoyed a period of eight years in the second division. The clubs decline was triggered by an injury to their finest player, Alick Jeffrey. At that point, they were second in the second division and were heading in to the top flight. After suffering relegation in 1958, they have hovered in the third and fourth division since.

Alick Jeffrey -  Jeffrey was the darling of Belle Vue during the 1950’s and 1960’s He was a fine outstanding talent who played for England in every level apart from the full England team. Many classify him as the clubs finest ever player.
