Darlington turned professional in the year 1908 and were installed as founder members of the third division north during the 1921 – 1922 season. They gained promotion in to the second division four years later, the 1926 – 1927 campaign. The Quakers became the founder members of the fourth division in 1956, having to wait eight years until they gained promotion in 1966. They only managed to stay in the third division for a single season and spent another 16 years in the fourth tier of English football before gaining promotion once against o the third division at the end of the 1984 – 1985 season. The 1988 – 1989 campaign proved to be a disaster for Darlington as they suffered relegation out of the football league; however they stormed back during the 1989 – 1990 season as they topped the non league table and gained promotion back to the football league.

Great Players
Frank Gray – Gray joined Darlington during the 1989 – 1990 season as player coach at the club and instantly became a regular during the 1989 – 1990 season. Gray enjoyed his finest moments at Leeds United and also played for Nottingham Forest. He is an experienced Scottish football international.
