They joined the football leagues second division in 1899 and spent ten years in the division. In the 1925 – 1926 season, Jimmy Cookson finished off as the top goal scorer with 44 goals; however they had to wait until 1931 for promotion back in to the second division from the third division North. Chesterfield was relegated once more in 1951 and the Spirietes have remained in the bottom division ever since. Chesterfield suffered relegation to the fourth division in 1983 and bounced back two years later only to go down again in 1989 staying for one season. They enjoyed a great run in the FA cup in 1997, reaching the semi finals of the competition, suffering elimination after a match against Middlesbrough. They are now playing their football in League one and enjoyed a good run in the 2006 – 2007 league cup, defeating Manchester city and West Ham United in the competition.

Dave Blakey – Blakey spent nearly 20 years at Chesterfiedl between 1948 and 1967 and holds the record of making the most league appearances for the Spireites with 613 appearances playing for the side while they were in the second division, third division north, third division and fourth division.
