Bristol City joined the second division of the football league in the year 1901. In the year 1906, the Robins won the second division title and reached the 1909 FA cup final, suffering defeat against Manchester United in the final. City was relegated in 1911 and by the year 1923 they had fallen in to the third division south. They spent the following 23 years in the second and third division. Bristol City found magical form during the 1954 – 1955 season as they gained an incredible 70 points and scored 101 goals to win the third division championship, in turn resulting in promotion to the second division. The Robins main objective during the 1960’s was survival rather than progress. The Robins reached the semi finals of the league cup in 1976, suffering defeat against Spurs. Under the new manager, Joe Jordan, Bristol City finished off the 1989 – 1990 season as runners up in the third division, resulting in promotion. They have recently been playing in the third tier of English football in league one.

John Atyeo – John Atyeo set various club records during his time at Bristol City. He recorded a record breaking 597 league appearances and netted in 314 goals in the league. He represented England, earning six caps and scored five goals.
