Brentford were elected in to the newly formed third division in 1921. The arrival of Harry Curtis as the new manager of the side in 1926 saw them emerge as one of the top clubs in the South of England. The 1930’s was a good ear for the Bees as they gained promotion in to the first division in 1936 and stayed in the top flight until 1947. By the year 1955 they were back in the third division south. After various different managers coming in, the Bees hovered around the third and fourth division between 1960 and 1978. They remained in the third division since 1978 and they enjoyed a good run in the Freight Rover Trophy in 1985, suffering defeat against Wigan Athletic. Steve Perryman took over they side in 1987 and took them to the quarter finals of the 1989 FA Cup. When Martin Allen was appointed as the new manager of Brentord early on in the 21st century, they nearly gained promotion to the second tier of English football as they finished third in the division at the end of 2005 – 2006 campaign.
