During the early years, the Tykes were a strong team in English football as they finished third place in the second division in 1922. Barnsley have enjoyed their greatest triumphs in the FA Cup, reaching the final in the 1910 FA Cup, suffering a 2-0 defeat against Newcastle United, however two years later they met West Brom in the final and despite going to a replay, they won 1-0 thanks to a Harry Tufnell winning goal. Barnsley were then regular members of the second division for 60 years, however they suffered relegation in the year 1959 and struggled in the league suffering relegation in to the lower divisions. The 1988 – 89 season was their finest in ages as they narrowly missed out on a play off place, finishing off in seventh place in the second division. They struck goal during the 1996 -1997 campaign as they earned promotion in to the premiership under the guidance of Danny Wilson. Their stay in the top flight only lasted one year and they gradually have deteriorated into o a third tier football side in recent times.
